A shift is happening right now — from prompt engineering to context engineering. Good. The research backs it up. Our own experience backs it up. Better context does produce better outputs.

But there’s a meaningful gap in the conversation. Context engineering improves what the AI sees. It doesn’t fundamentally change what the human does with it.

You can have the right documents pulled in, memory that carries across conversations, carefully designed instructions — and still find yourself passively accepting outputs you don’t question. Better inputs. Same behavior. Better infrastructure. Same relationship. That’s not the end state. It’s the midpoint.


The evolution of how we work with AI

Each approach expands the scope of what we’re designing — from the request itself, to the environment around it, to the full system of human-AI interaction.

1. Prompt Engineering

Focus: The Ask

“How do I phrase my request?”

What it includes

  • Writing the prompt
  • Structuring instructions
  • Choosing output format

Assumption

The prompt is the primary lever.

Limitation

Treats interaction as input → output.
Works for simple tasks — breaks down in real work.

2. Context Engineering

“What does the AI need to know?”

  • Iteration — how ideas evolve
  • Judgment — how decisions are made
